Newly crowned World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao offered an unsolicited advice to Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire Jr., saying the dethroned WBO super bantamweight champion should work harder during training.
?Don?t be lazy and always go hard in training,? Pacquiao said.
Prior to fighting Jessie Vargas on Sunday at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Pacquiao witnessed Donaire lost his title via unanimous decision to Jessie Magdaleno.
?In boxing, you cannot take your training lightly and you can?t be lazy,? Pacquiao (59-6-2 record with 38 knockouts) told The Manila Times on Wednesday. ?You have to train hard and wisely. Boxing is no joke.?
Pacquiao said there is no one to blame but himself when a boxer was beaten in a fight.
?Whoever your trainer is if you don?t train seriously, you?ll end up with nothing,? he said. ?I?m hoping he?ll train seriously if he?s determined to come back.?
Donaire, who was previously trained by his father, replaced the latter with Cuban coach Ismael Salas in August. Donaire was visibly slow in the fight and unable to land solid punches on Magdaleno.
?I definitely won the fight. I thought I got control in the second half of the fight. Losing never crossed my mind. This is unbelievable,? Donaire told ESPN.Com writer Dan Rafael after the bout.
But Pacquiao believes otherwise.
?Magdaleno is an Olympian, a good undefeated fighter and hungry. Donaire took his opponent for granted and I don?t know why. His footwork was heavy, no air and there?s no timing,? Pacquiao said.
Last September, Donaire told fighthype.com writer Luis Sandoval that he would not vote for Pacquiao if his compatriot runs for president someday.
