RIO DE JANEIRO–I am getting confused. When it comes to Golden Boy, does Shane Mosley work for the promotional company?
He has those all important vice presidential stripes and an equity share, believed to be five percent, doesn?t he?
Or does he only work for the Goldens?
I have to ask this impertinent question as to both Sweet Sugar and Sourpuss Floyd Mayweather;
Does Mayweayther work for Golden Boy or vice versa?
I feel like the guy who unwittingly brought the ants to the company picnic here but this is a question because right now both Mosley and Mayweather are in uncomfortable positions.
To use Bob Arum?s expression,. Mosley is ?in the on deck circle? and waiting for a chance to fight Manny Pacquiao.
To stick with the baseball terminology, Mosley will never get his bat off his shoulder as they are almost ready to start printing tickets at the MGM Grand for Pacman against Arum chattel Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14.
Arum frankly never wanted the still formidable Mosley as a Pacman foe. Arum?s distaste for Mosley in that role was buttressed by the handy fact that Manny trainer Coach Freddie Roach woiuld prefer to steer clear of Mosley also.
Mosley could be sitting in the bullpen or the dugout for all that matters because he will probably finish his starry, Hall Of Fame calibver career without crossing gloves with the Pinoy Idol.
Now a more rude question…with 2009 halfway over, where?s the alternative date and opponent for Mosley?
The Goldens seem to be snoozing on that issue.
For a fighter at Mosley?s age, approaching 38, resting is really rusting and not having a fight this year will hurt this final portion of his career.
Maybe the Goldens want to grant Antonio Margarito a rematch when he comes out of the handwrap penalty box, I do not know.
Which brings me over to Money May as in Money May Pay The IRS but Money Must Fight To Get The Money That Money May Pay.
Now here?s the scary part about PBF and his unscheduled date for a fight against Juan Manuel Marquez. In speaking to vetewran Las Vegas Review Journal reporter Steve Carp, Richie Rich Schaefer is hedging on the talked about new date of Sept. 19.
Here is what Carp wrote:
?`Richard Schaefer, chief executive officer for Golden Boy Promotions, said that date is available for the arena and for HBO, which is scheduled to present the fight on pay per view. Golden Boy promotes Marquez
“Right now, we’re waiting to see what the doctor says,” Schaefer said. “But I can tell you Floyd and Marquez will fight sometime this year. Whether it’s September, October, November, I don’t know.”
Schaefer also said reports that advance ticket sales were sluggish for the original date were erroneous.
“I have the reports right in front of me, and there have been $5.5 million in sales already,” Schaefer said. “That’s ahead of the pace that Pacquiao and (Ricky) Hatton did at the same time frame. So all that talk (that) the fight isn’t selling is a lot of bull. It’s all the Floyd haters making stuff up.”
Now, as the guy who delivered the ants who swarmed the food baskets and ruined the alfresco corporate outing, I must ask my final probing question of the day.
And that is, isn?t now likely that Mosley?s 2009 boxing schedule ended with his one and done bout against Margocheato in January and isn?t it also probable given the iffy remarks by Schaefer that Mayweather will not glove up until 2010?
And you thought those were chocolate sprinkles in your vanilla ice cream cup.
Come on man, chocolate sprinkles do not have legs and dance like Mayweather can.
Schaefer and his minions need to do more than shuffle papers from one desk to another because the vice president in charge of insulting Caucasians, Bernard Hopkins, has also been inactive for all of this year.
If BHop goes through 2009 without a high paying bout, then it could be a trifecta of unhappy Golden campers.
In perspective, those marching ants are only a minor irritant.
Mosley, Mayweather and Hopkins sit on the sidelines. They are idols, and I use the term loosely, remaining idle.
At least BHop and Mosley get to punch their Golden time cards.
Maybe they will save Marquez-Mayweather for just before Christmas.
Now there is a real holiday stocking stuffer is there ever was one.
