Ballet Manila took ?Flight!? at the Venetian Theatre
(Macao, June 30, 2013) ? Premier Philippine ballet company Ballet Manila put on an eclectic show at The Venetian? Macao Sunday night, presenting 11 ballet pieces in total.
Flight! with Ballet Manila provided an innovative and thoroughly entertaining evening of ballet at the Venetian Theatre. The featured dances included ?Sotto Voce,? choreographed to Pachelbel?s famous Canon in D major; the Romeo and Juliet Suite ? a choreographic miniature with five dancers including prima ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde ? depicting the story of Romeo and Juliet in 22 minutes, focusing on the love story; Dulce ? a ballroom cum ballet dance performed by 16 dancers, celebrating the Filipino way of friendship, courtship and marriage. The first Philippines-based prima ballerina and the first foreign soloist of Russia?s Kirov Ballet, Macuja-Elizalde was specially invited to perform in Sunday?s Macao performance; her accomplishments in more than two decades of dance have made her one of the most esteemed icons of her generation.
As a sponsor of the show, The Venetian Macao presented Flight! with Ballet Manila to Macao locals and visitors as an enriching addition to Macao?s cultural performance offering. Envisioned as a ballet company by the dancers, of the dancers and for the dancers, Ballet Manila ranks dance training and education among its foremost priorities. Most of its present soloists and members have had professional training exclusively with Ballet Manila, under the watchful eyes of artistic director and principal dancer Macuja-Elizalde and ballet master Osias Barroso, who have trained the company in the highly rigorous Vaganova method of classical ballet.
