Unbeaten bantamweight Abner Mares, of Montebello, CA, will box Robert Allanic, of Cebu City, Philippines, in the scheduled 10-round semifinal Friday evening, March 2, at the New Alhambra, Swanson & Ritner Streets, next to Forman Mills, in South Philadelphia. First fight at 7.30 p.m. Topping the card is a scheduled 10-round junior welterweight match between Mike Stewart, of New Castle, DE, and Enrique Colin, of Guasave, Mexico.
Telefutura/Univision will televise the both fights nationally as part of its Solo Boxeo series. The TV portion of the card runs 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The Mares-Allanic contest replaces the originally scheduled IBF welterweight eliminator between David Estrada and Walter Matthysse, which was canceled when Estrada became ill.
Mares, 21, was a member of the 2004 Mexican Olympic team. He is 10-0 as a pro with eight knockouts. This will mark his East Coast debut.
In his last fight Nov. 25 in Hidalgo, TX, Mares knocked out previously unbeaten (9-0) Wilmer Rodriguez, of the Dominican Republic, in four rounds.
Allanic, 21, has a 15-2 record with seven K0s. This will mark his first fight in the United States.
The March 2 card is being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, Peltz Boxing Promotions, and Joe Hand Promotions.
